Ok, this one I hope yall take lightheartedly. >) I was just thinking about this the other day, seeing the new raids/dungeons and it reminded me how heavily greek, egyptian, norse, lovecraft, etc types of mythology influence the game. Which got me thinking, what’s left to do? JC & Pals of course, though I doubt they’d ever go that far… maybe start bringing in some of the eastern gods?

Guess the idea is that if a religion is dead and/or not very popular (is the whole Cthulu-thing really a religion??) then why not recycle it? However Raid Bosses from a living religion would produce the following effect ‘Quick with killing Ki-ree-shana! My prayers start in 15 minutes!’ = many players lost => not happening
I actually don’t think that the any WoW lore will ever produce the phrase ‘Quick with killing Ki-ree-shana! My prayers start in 15 minutes!’ - those who do pray regularly will do so already (and will most likely be smart enough to schedule around it) and those who don’t pray regularly is not likely to start just because the WoW lore resembles an active religion.
So, ofc it will work to bring in a living religion, they just have to hide the story well to not upset anyone. One irl example would be CS Lewis - Narnia is essentially just the bible stories rewritten with other characters and new names.
dunno, cause they got what looks like a Hindu god (shiva maybe?) running around for the longest time. Could be wrong about that, but I’ve seen them in BC and that was my first thought. And Hindu is very much active.
And I think you may be right, Winter, putting a full on active religion would be very difficult. It’s easy to use ancient ones cause nobody practices them anymore, but as soon as you have JC pop in for a showdown, they’d probably get a lot of backlash.
But what about the not so mainstream or western religions? Not really talking about having Buddha lay the smack down, but things like Shinto and a lot of eastern mythology and even superstition (like with spirits/demons and whatnot).
lovecraft isn’t exactly a religion, but he and others have created quite a fictional mythology around it. Although Jedi is now… so um… maybe they can do that? XD
You are right about the four-handed demon called SHIVArra, but I guess they did not push the idea further
I’ve heard the Lion being Christ’s reference, but your explanation, Wintermute, brings a new light to the thing
And yeah, Jedi.. and lightsabers.. must.. resist..
Your idea reminds me that of Penny Arcade’s
heh, never saw that one.
Unfortunately gnomes have light sabers already, check out the starting zone quests. Loved this one today, took no offense and honestly half expect this soon.
hmm, haven’t checked out the gnome starting area in a while!! guess that’ll be my next thing to do! XD
As a Kemetic Pagan, I feel refuse to do the Uldum dungeons as they are all based on my particular belief system. I felt sorry for the Asatru Pagan’s in Ulduar too. It’s almost akin to making Jesus or Mary a raid boss for Christians. Just because a belief system isn’t mainstream or an organised religion, it doesn’t mean there’s no one who will be offended.
Ah, cool! Didn’t know that was the name of it!!! My old argument is that it’s strange for us to call old religions “mythologies”, I mean, just cause you conquer them doesn’t make it any less of a belief right? Oh well… But it’s refreshing to see that some of the older faiths still have followers.
i didnt see any greek mythology references except ulduman
idk if im missing something?
they’re in there… maybe a bit more oblique than say the whole Egyptian theme, but if you dig around the lore in particular you can see a few references. One that comes to mind is Aman and the other titans. A few raid bosses I’ve seen, even in ol BC days had a distinctly greekish gods appeal to them, but maybe it’s just me.
I guess it’d be hard to have a full on greek zone, ya know, with Kratos running around causing trouble…
Hindu, maybe?
Time for the naga to come home.
